Top 10 Tips to Reduce Plastic: Tip#1
Bravo if you’ve made a New Year’s Resolution to reduce the amount of plastic in your life. Now that I'm in YearTwo of Living Plastic Free I thought I'd share EnviroWoman’s Top 10 ways to reduce plastic, based on a year’s worth of experience. So here's Tip#1...
When shopping (not just grocery shopping, but for any shopping) take along your own packing bag.
Just make sure it’s made of cotton, canvas or a natural fiber (like these cheeky ones from BringYourOwnBag). A bag made out of nylon (which is plastic) or recycled plastic is still plastic, so in a way, you’re kinda defeating your good intentions.
And if you’re shopping for a big family – bring a box instead of a bag. Hey if it’s okay at Costco, why isn’t it okay for Safeway and IGA?
When grocery shopping EnviroWoman takes her handy wire basket along and uses it to pack her groceries in and out of the store. I LOVE my wire basket. I'm the only person in the supermarket who has one...so it makes me feel like an UberEnviroTrendSetter. (Dillusionary, aren't I?)
She also uses a big canvas bag from Ellis Designs (no plastic handles, or buttons, but alas, a plastic inside pocket zipper), which does double duty as a purse for regular shopping.
And now it’s time for an EnviroWomanRANT
You may have noticed it's becoming more ‘fashionable’ to bring your own bag. And that’s a great thing.
But at the same time, it bugs EnviroWoman. Here’s why...
People think that if they bring their own bag they are doing their part to save the planet. They pat themselves on the back for being ‘green’.
Where is the 'green' action in that?
They do not see the irony.
Now, EnviroWoman ain’t no eco-Saint. She admits she didn’t see the irony in this either before taking the NoNewPlasticPledge.
But now EnviroWoman does.
And if you stand really close to her in the checkout line, looking at all those plastic filled shopping carts….you can hear her screaming inside. There is no hope. We humans are a lost cause. The planet is on a FastTrackToDisaster.
Sorry if I burst your EcoBubble here. But let's face it, Tip #1 is not enough.
Bringing your own shopping bag is only a wee baby step on the path that takes you to 'living green'. Truth is....you still have a long, long, long way to go. Lots more behaviours to change. Scary. Sad. But necessary.
Now, don't go give up. Instead, cheer up. 'Cuz chicky-poos you're in good company. EnviroWoman still has a long, long way to go too.
Tip #1 may be a baby step, but it’s still a baby step worth taking.

I wish I could carry that f*@K plastic bag. I have kids and well, it's not worth the looks. I do carry canvas bags and cringe when I see carts piled high with plastic bags.
i agree one hundred percent to this post. with the recent trends it's so easy to fall into self-congratulating without helping nearly enough. shame.
on another note, i have been waiting for months to ask you about how you live plastic free with regards to this ultra-important factor:
cleaning! specifically, sponges?! i try to think of a way to properly clean a toilet... (with bronners.. and just my bare hands?! i hate germs!) and it's kind of daunting. do you use sponges? aren't they either plastic or else an animal? (not to mention the plastic wrapper?) this has been bugging me a lot, and any help is greatly appreciated.
so glad you're back, EnviroWoman! i was having major withdrawal symptoms :P
Happy new year, Envirowoman!
Here in Japan, I'm trying to reduce my plastic and disposable chopsticks consumption. There is always a folded shopping bag in my backpack to carry my groceries. Supermarkets give you a 100 yen discount after 10 purchases with no plastic bags.
I find that, if I eat fresh, whole foods, no plastic is required. I'm eating better, too!

Yes indeedy. A good mom has to set not only an eco-example, but also a moral one too. So I will allow you to enjoy the f*@k bag vicariously through me, while setting the 'good parent' example to your kids with plain, boring, but super eco-friedly canvas bags.
Cheers - EnviroWoman

I don't use sponges. I use rags for the toilet rim, which can be washed. And a natural bristle (either coconut or sisal), wooden handled brush for the bowl. Does the trick for me. Mine is from Merben International and I got it at an earthy soap shop.
It's intended to be a dry body brush. But when I saw it I thought TOILET. Expensive...but my toilet is worth it.
Most sponges were indeed once live animals or are fake plastic. So against my cruelty-free code.

Is that your real name or a moniker you've made up? Either way it ROCKS!
Good on ya for reducing the plastic and single-use chopstick consumption.
I totally agree - going plastic-free means you eat fresh food for the bulk of your diet. And that's great. Fewer chemicals.
Egads...I've even started watching the Food Channel on TV!!
Thanks for reading.

I'm so happy to see you back!! Your blog is both inspiring, witty and informative. I really appreciate all fo the effort you put into researching topics and options. Thank you!
Your point regarding babysteps is one that I can relate to. Trying to change the way a family of five shops, cooks, eats, cleans, celebrates, spends time, etc has been an enlightening, if sometimes challenging, path.
I've found that the easiest way for me to avoid overly packaged foods is to avoid the places where they're sold - like Costco, for instance. In this regard, the Vancouver Farmer's Market has been a big help and it was a surprise and delight to find out that they opened a winter market this year.
The change in shopping venues has meant that we've had to change the kind of foods we eat - less packaged, ready to cook stuff, more fresh, from scratch stuff.
In talking to friends about the changes we've made, most are curious about the added cost of our choices - buying local, organic produce for instance.
I'm wondering the same about your no plastic choice - what financial impact has the pledge had on your life?
Hey there Late Bloomer
I agree about avoiding the places that sell over packaged food. But it's kinda of a chicken versus egg thing. It wasn't until I took the NoNewPlasticPledge that I discovered where I shopped was a challenge...so I needed to find new places that had what I was looking for.
But anyway, who cares if the chicken or egg came first! So long as it puts you on the baby step path right?
Your kids are lucky to have a 'conscious' parent. Although, a lot of times it's what the kids are taught at school that bring that new consciousness to the homefront. No matter, so long as the consciousness happens.
I didn't know about the Winter Farmer's Market, so I'll have to check it out. Thanks for that.
I shop alot at Kin's Produce Market during the winter, and now go to Hop On farm off Marine Drive - lots of their stuff is grown right there.
I can't tell you the full impact on my financial life because my hard drive crashed and I lost all my financial records. But I do remember checking my 2007 vs 2006 grocery expense in October and I had spent 37% less in 2007. I could hardly believe it!
If I'm ever able to restore that hard drive I'll update my books to year end and report on what I find.
Cheers - and good luck on your path to a greener life.
I am SO getting a "F*@k plastic bags" tote! No danger of being called a "bleeding heart" with that thing ...
...plus, it's really just so ME.
Envirowoman, u are doing a great service with this post.
I live in Berkeley so lots of us out there.

Here in NZ I have sourced Wettex cleaning cloths (spongecloth).
They are wrapped in cellophane, come in packs of 3 and are made from natural materials reinforced with cotton. They are packed dry to avoid the use of chemical preservatives. They last alot longer than the other types of spongecloths most of which are now "antibacterial" ie: full of toxic chemicals. I recently saw them on sale in Foodtown or try Freudenberg Household Products 0800 422 297 NZ or 1800 500 513 Australia. They are made in Sweden.
Recently I started carrying canvas bags as well and I just love them! The ease of just throwing your things into your bag and checking out of the store with the same bag is just great. Plus there's the added bonus of not having plastic bags everywhere in the house! Great Post :)
Homemaker of the 21st Century
hi! just ran across your blog this weekend and I think it's great. I'm sharing the link with all my kids in the hopes it will wake a couple of them up. In fact it has made me stop and take a second look at some of the things I buy. I realized today that the biggest share of plastic that comes into my house comes in as shampoo and conditioner bottles so I'm looking for a better alternative to those.
Wonderful comments as well as inspiring blog posts. Give us more! One question: if my grocery store is selling bags made of recycled plastic, isn't that keeping at least that much plastic out of the landfills (and ocean)?
I'm (♀), VietNam
I like this blog is so cool
Anyway, It's nice to see your blog
God Bless you
Again
Yes, it's so true that we must walk our talk if we want to really make a difference. But every little bit does help on this eco-friendly, less plastic journey.
where did you get the wire basket? I like that. would come in really handy at the Farmer's market as well.
Ya, I think so..These are the good way to prevent more plastic in future...Thanks.

I think a lot of people don't realize the amount of plastic/packaging they're consuming when they purchase things. One of the biggest things that cut down on our plastic consumption was switching to filtered tap water. The amount of plastic we were recycling was insane.
This is a great blog that I'm definitely checking back on!
Hey guys!

very nice tips, I was added your blog to my bookmarks
I enjoy reading your blogs, and you make wonderful points! You mentioned how you see so many people using reusable bags but buying products wrapped in plastic, which makes no sense. I just want to point out though that change takes time, and for EACH person that has stopped using plastic bags, 300-700 less will be discarded. As you said, it is a 'small step', but it makes me happy to see people taking a step!
