Plastic free: CFL Light Bulbs

I know, I know…you’re thinking…'EnviroWoman this is a no-brainer. Of course you’re buying Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs. They use 60% less energy. They last up to 15 times longer. Every Green Guide on the planet evangelizes them as being an energy saver. And energy saviour. I think they may even be able to walk on water.'

Well, life is full of ironies. And this is one of them.

And we’re not talking an itsy-bitsy paramecium-sized irony. We’re talking a big, honkin’ Godzilla Meets Tyrannosaurus Rex-sized irony.

Yup, get ready for it….you know what’s coming….CFL light bulbs are packaged in plastic.

And not just an innocuous bit of plastic that EnviroWoman could excuse as a MINOR SIN.

But a big, bad wad of plastic. You know the stuff I’m talking about….the hard clear kind that entombs its precious cargo. The kind called ‘blister pak’…oh, so appropriately and ironically named.

The kind that has no customer-friendly ‘tear here’ pull tabs to save your precious digits.

The kind you have to do battle with. That breaks xacto-knife blades and dulls stainless steel scissors.

The kind that puts you in such an instant fit of rage TheBeast goes scrambling for cover.

The kind that if you were into conspiracy theories you would swear was an evil retail plot to prevent you from ever returning another light bulb, printer cartridge, or computer accessory ‘in its original packaging’ as so often is required.

The kind that if you were really really into conspiracy theories you would swear was an evil plot to secretly decrease the human population by making a person’s blood pressure go from 120/80 to 210/120 in sixty seconds…boiling so high they keel over dead right there on the spot.

And it gets worse. The kind of plastic that doesn’t even have a recycling code on it…so it can’t be thrown into our recycling blue boxes.

Yuppers, it’s gotta go in the garbage only to take decades and decades to degrade.

A veritable sheep in wolf’s clothing.

A SAINT dressed as a SINNER.

Ironic isn’t it?

EnviroWoman was so heart-wrenched by this revelation she was moved to wax poetically...

Do not go gentle into that good light,
Eco-agers should rant and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the plastic packaging plight.

Though EnviroWoman in her heart knows CFL is right,
Because her pledge has forced a no-new plastic way
She can not go gentle into that good light.

Rage, rage against the plastic packaging plight.
Well, its not quite as good as Dylan Thomas but ya get my point.

By now you’re probably thinking…'Holy crap, EnviroWoman is gonna have to commit a whole new category of eco-sin and buy the lowly standard light bulb.’

Ah, but you know EnviroWoman is as persistent as the Pope is catholic.

She searched The Bay, and Sears, and London Drugs, and Shoppers Drug Mart...and finally googled and was steered towards Canadian Tire. There she found a cardboard packaged CFL bulb produced my Noma. Gotta love the Noma...they got it right. Gotta love the Canadian Tire....they got it right too.

EnviroWoman can now rid herself of rage, rage...and return to her normal GiddyZen state.

So here’s how things add up:
Category: CFL lightbulbs
SAINT: Noma
Price: The same
Quality: The same
SINNER: Phillips, Duramax, Globe, (well, that's not very green of you guys)
Lessons Learned:

Sometimes the greenies get it wrong. They try to enlighten us, but sometimes we have to enlighten them. Philips, Duramax, Globe…you’re gonna hear from EnviroWoman.

Wow...yes, now that's ironic. I'm loving your blog. Thanks for making me think!

i'm wondering if they do that because of concern of the bulb breaking and releasing the mercury content. but, they could at least make it a recyclable plastic.

you are my hero woman! I wanted to join crunchy chicken's low impact week and the only thing we aren't doing in her suggestion lists is using the cfl bulbs {in all fixtures} i myself did not want to purchase them in the plastic! I don't have your energy so thank you for doing the research. Thank you for all of your information! I bow to my hero, TeeHeeHee!

Mighty sad too.

For sure the companies will say they entomb their precious bulbs in blister paks to prevent breakage. (But then why are computer electronical cords and printer cartridges and scissors and other less breakable stuff blister pak-ed too?)

I think it's also to prevent theft (a bit harder to carry out of the store un-noticed).

But then again...there are those two other conspiracy theories...if you're in to that stuff...

Oh, and on the mercury point... the bulbs are gonna break in a landfill anyway...leaching out all that toxic mercury crap..... I guess it's better not to have it happen in the store, or in your car...but who cares if it happens in your home...or in the landfill. Right? No...just kidding.

Way to go...rage rage against the plastic packaging plight.

I hear WalMart may also have non-plastic CFLs...but I never shop there.

I gotta spend some more time on Crunchy Chicken's site...she commented on my other blog so I discovered her (and the Diva Cup discussion) a while ago. She rocks.

Hero Woman? Wow. Maybe that will have to become EnviroWoman's secret incognito handle.

Envirowoman - I just discovered your blog and I'm so excited! I feel like I have totally been missing out. I can't wait to read through all your old blogs. I guess I should do some reading first, but have you done a segement on pet toys. Think of all the plastic pet toys on the market. You have given me some inspiration for my own blog http://thisGREENlife.wordpress.com. It's for GREEN pet lovers. Thanks so much for the inspiration. You have another avid reader!

Hey EnviroWoman: I was just at Lowe's and they had a six-pack of CFLs in an all-cardboard packaging. Also depending on your area, I believe that some recycling centers are equipped to accept CFLs. I'm sure a quick search would point you to a center. Hope this helps. :)

Glad you discovered me. And you know what, you have been missing out...there are some very cool fellow greenchicks (who go by other names, like sara, ww, miss luscious luka and more) that contribute their comments to this blog and make it so full of good info.

I have not done a segment on pet toys. Very cool idea. TheBeast isn't into toys...or should I say...I am her toy.

But that doesn't mean I never will...I have a whole swack of stuff to write about...pet toys would be cool. After all, EnviroWoman is an animal lover through and through. (She's luvs them more than humans).

Frelling awesome name you have there woman. (assuming you are a woman)

Thanks for pointing us all in the direction of Lowe's. I hopped onto their website (I don't think we have them here in Vancouver) and it looks like the brand Bright Effects is the one you're talking about. But definitely not Sylvania who, alas, is a SINNER.

Gotta luv the Bright Effects. Gotta luv the Lowes.

Wow...very eye opening. Thank you envirowoman. I've seen it, but I never thought about it. They are wrapped in nonearth friendly plastic! I'm adding it to my list of the lesser of two environmental evils. I love that you are helping us find an alternative. As for green pet products I have a list of them at my blog and a bunch of links saved up if your interested.

I don't know if my facts are correct here but I have heard that unless you are buying American made florescent light bulbs then you are supporting the Chinese who are developing coal fired factories by the dozens every month. Does anyone have any research on this? If it is true, then we are only causing a bigger problem by fouling the air in order to save electricity.

Sorry to burst Noma and CTC's perfection bubble but if you examine the ballast portion of the cfl (that great big honkin' piece of white stuff between the screw-in end and the light tube) you'll find that it is "PLASTIC".

Greatest irony here is that these bulbs (Bright Effects from Lowes especially) ***last only 2-3 months***. So you are buying bulbs that last a fraction of the time an incandescent does, and in ridiculous amounts of plastic packaging geared toward the naive US market.

This is a *green gone wrong* big time.

DO NOT purchase Bright Effects compact fluorescent bulbs from Lowe's. Mine only lasted a year if that. They were expensive and pieces of junk. They do not have a website listed, so you can't contact them either. These were guaranteed to last at least 5 years. I did not keep the receipt so I can't return the dumb things.

Indeed, those "bubble" packs are evil. Here is my trick to get them open: Tin Snips. They work great. Get the yellow handle (straight cut) ones and it goes through that plastic like butter.

BTW, since your post last year, I've notice more and more of companies are putting a Recycle code on them.

Side tangent: Bright Effects light bulbs. Garbage. With that said, call their "corporate" number at 1-866-326-BULB. Get ready to read some numbers off the bulb. Also, be sure to say you only burn them about 2 to 3 hours a day. ;-)
